Measure and prepare

Measure the rectangular surface. Count equal-size doors and windows with their widths and heights, or enter a known combined opening area. Small openings still create offcuts, so do not over-credit them.

Separate walls and ceilings by the board type they require. Measure height at several points if the floor or ceiling is uneven, and note each opening so the installer can plan cuts around corners. Deduct only areas truly left uncovered. Measure taped joint length after drawing the board layout; a blank tape field means unknown, while zero means there are no taped joints to buy for.

How the estimate works

Divide net area with allowance by board area and round to full boards. For joint compound, divide net board area by the chosen product’s stated coverage per bag. Divide measured taped-joint length by roll length for tape; if joints have not been measured, the tape result stays blank.

The example has 9.6 ÷ 2.88 = 3.33 board equivalents. Adding 10% gives 3.67, rounded to four whole boards. For the example compound yield, 9.6 ÷ 70 = 0.14 bags, so one full bag is needed. If a measured joint layout has 91 m of tape and rolls contain 90 m, two rolls are needed; without that measurement the tool leaves tape quantity unknown.

Check the order

Confirm board thickness, edge type, any moisture or fire rating, and compatible tape and compound. Check the selected compound bag’s coverage and tape roll length; list screws and framing separately.

Check board suitability for the application: internal wall, ceiling, damp location or a specified fire system. Edge type affects joint finishing, and tape and compound must match the manufacturer’s system. Check the selected compound’s bag size, coverage and shelf life before treating the example yield as an order quantity.

Limits of the estimate

Board area is a preliminary estimate before framing and joint layout. Compound yield varies with system and finishing method. Tape requires a real joint plan; leave it blank rather than entering zero if unknown.

An area result can undercount when studs or ceiling framing force additional joints or openings leave unusable pieces. Compound uses a product’s area coverage as a planning yield, rather than measuring every seam profile. Screws, framing, insulation and full-surface plastering are outside this count. Have the installer reconcile the board layout and finish system before ordering.

Common questions

Why are tape rolls blank?

Measured joint length is not entered. Lay out the boards, measure taped joints and enter the length.

Do all compound bags cover the same area?

No. Enter the selected product’s yield for the intended finish.

Does this include framing?

No. Framing, screws and fixings need a separate list.
