Estimate pond water and liner
A simple rectangular, vertical-wall estimate using internal dimensions and edge allowance.
Back to calculator ↑Find water volume
Length × width × depth gives m³; multiply by 1,000 for litres. Use actual water level rather than a higher rim.
Measure inner length and width at the water level and the depth water will actually reach. Do not use the earth rim if overflow keeps water lower. For shelves and deep zones, measure volumes separately and add them rather than applying maximum depth to the whole pond.
Allow liner for walls and anchors
Each liner dimension covers the pond span, both side depths and both edge anchors. Compare the result with actual roll dimensions.
The example 5.2 × 4.2 m liner is a sheet-size estimate before checking shape. A roll only 4 m wide is too narrow, even if its total sold area exceeds 21.84 m². Check width and length separately, plus any manufacturer-approved seam method.
Worked default example
A 3 × 2 × 0.8 m pond holds 4,800 L. With 0.3 m anchor on each edge, the simple liner is 5.2 × 4.2 m or 21.84 m².
Increasing edge anchor from 0.3 to 0.5 m per side changes the required sheet to 5.6 × 4.6 m, or 25.76 m², a 3.92 m² increase. Agree on the edge detail with the installer before ordering; calculated area alone does not guarantee a workable cut from a supplied roll.
Measure complex shapes separately
Sloped walls, shelves, curves, seams and overlaps require extra measurements. The straight-wall formula may understate a real liner order.
Real liners can need extra material at corner folds, vulnerable edges and changing ground levels. The formula does not choose material or thickness. The 4,800 L water result is only the entered geometric volume, not a rule for fish, pumps or water-quality maintenance.
If available liner width is below either calculated sheet dimension, look for a wider sheet or a manufacturer-approved joining method. Rotating dimensions does not make an insufficient roll area or width workable by itself. Allow for changes in excavation measurements and corner folding before buying.
If plants or filter equipment occupy part of the pond, assess their displacement separately from actual water volume. This estimate begins with an empty rectangular shape.
Common questions
Is liner area just the pond floor?
No. It must cover the walls and edge anchors.
Can I use this for sloped walls?
Only as a rough reference; measure the actual slopes and liner size.
Can litres determine stocking?
No. Water quality, filtration, oxygen and species also matter.
