Measure and prepare

Measure each frame at the spline channel. Add grip allowance on every edge, then verify the cut fits the roll width. Calculate unlike frames separately.

Measure at the spline channel, not the glass edge. Add working mesh around left, right, top and bottom according to the installation method. Confirm the roll’s real width and length before calculating. Group frames by size; different frame sizes cannot all be treated as equal cuts.

How the estimate works

Cut size adds allowance on both sides. Floor roll width divided by cut width for pieces across; floor roll length divided by cut height for rows. Multiply and round required rolls up.

The 0.8 × 1.2 m opening with 0.05 m per edge becomes a 0.9 × 1.3 m cut. Only one cut fits across a 1.2 m roll. Along its 7.62 m length, 7.62 ÷ 1.3 = 5.86, so only five full rows fit. Four equal frames need one roll, even though their combined area is much less than total roll area.

Check the order

Choose mesh by insect size, visibility, airflow and use conditions. Confirm roll dimensions and buy spline that fits the frame channel.

Select mesh for the insects involved and the desired view; denser mesh can affect airflow. Confirm roll width, colour and spline size against the frame channel. A spline roller and cutting tool are needed for fitting, but the calculated roll count does not include them.

Limits of the estimate

This simple layout uses one orientation and equal frames. It does not optimize mixed small pieces within offcuts.

The layout keeps every cut in one orientation and discards incomplete rows. It does not rotate cuts or combine mixed sizes in side offcuts. If cut width or height exceeds the roll, the tool identifies the limiting dimension. Choose a suitable roll instead of assuming an unsupported seam will work. Replace old hardened or shrunken spline with a size matched to the measured channel. The right mesh quantity cannot compensate for a loose fixing. Fit one frame before cutting the whole roll to confirm the edge allowance is workable.

Common questions

Why allow grip around edges?

Extra mesh reaches the spline channel and is trimmed after fitting.

Can roll width equal the opening?

Add allowance on both sides before comparing.

Can I mix frame sizes?

Calculate separately and plan the combined cuts from actual offcuts.
