Measure tiles and order whole boxes
A tile order starts with the actual area to cover, the exact tile format and its packaging. Use the calculator to turn measured area into tiles and whole boxes.
Back to calculator ↑Measure the surface to be covered
For a rectangular floor, multiply internal width by length in metres. For walls, measure each wall or section and add them before entering the total. Deduct only areas that genuinely will not be tiled, such as a large opening; do not subtract the grout-joint area from the tile order.
Run separate plans for different tile sizes, finishes or colours. Even when their areas add to one room, the pieces per box and dye lots may differ. Confirm the chosen tile is rated for the intended floor or wall and wet or outdoor conditions.
From tile area to boxes
Enter tile width and length in centimetres; tile area is width × length ÷ 10,000 m². The calculator applies your cutting allowance once to net area and rounds the piece count up. With a stated pieces-per-box pack, it rounds boxes from that piece count. With a stated m²-per-box pack, it instead divides required area by labelled box coverage and rounds up.
Example: a 4 × 5 m floor with no deduction is 20 m². A 60 × 60 cm tile covers 0.36 m². With 10% allowance, the target is 22 m² and the piece count is ceil(22 ÷ 0.36) = 62. If an exact SKU contains four tiles per box, buy ceil(62 ÷ 4) = 16 boxes, containing 64 tiles and 23.04 m² by nominal dimensions.
Set allowance from the layout
Your allowance should cover cuts, breakage and any spare tiles you want to keep. The tool does not add another hidden spare quantity. Diagonal patterns, complex rooms, matching veins or very large formats can change cutting losses; a tile setter can check a layout sketch before ordering.
Read the exact box label: pieces per box and stated area per box are different input routes. Do not mix them or assume that another tile of the same nominal size has identical packaging. Published box area can be rounded, so verify the specific SKU with the seller.
Budget and associated materials
With a price per box, tile cost is boxes × price. With a price per purchased square metre, it uses the calculated purchased coverage instead. Labour uses net tiled area, and extras are a single entered amount. A subtotal made from incomplete prices is not a full installation quote.
The tile count does not include adhesive, grout, edge trim, waterproofing or substrate repair. Check shade/batch consistency, edge type, slip suitability, delivery timing and whether unopened boxes can be returned. Estimate adhesive and grout separately using their actual product rates.
Common questions
Should I subtract a door or opening?
Deduct the opening only if it truly will not be tiled; do not deduct grout joints.
Is four 60 × 60 cm tiles the same as 1.44 m² per box?
In this nominal example yes, but use the count or coverage printed for the exact SKU.
Are adhesive and grout included?
No. Calculate them separately from the chosen product’s consumption rate and pack size.
