Vinyl Flooring Calculator

Measure the floor, enter the actual square metres per box, then see whole boxes, spare coverage and any known costs.

Measure the floor

For a stair opening or fixed area you will leave uncovered. Deduct only space you really will not floor.

L-shaped room or several rooms? Measure in sections and bring the total back here.

Set the box coverage

10% and 2.2 m²/box are editable examples, not guarantees. Check the exact SKU label; diagonal layouts and complex rooms can require more.

Underlay (if applicable)

This calculator covers boxed vinyl planks and tiles, not sheet vinyl rolls. Gluedown and click products may have different substrate and underlay requirements.

Add prices for a budget (optional)

Leave unknown prices blank; enter 0 for a known zero cost. Only known prices enter the subtotal.

Estimate boxed vinyl planks and tiles

This estimate is for boxed vinyl planks or tiles, not sheet vinyl sold by the roll. Decide whether the chosen product is glued down or clicked together before specifying underlay and preparation.

Know what the box count covers

Measure net floor area in square metres, deducting only spaces you will leave uncovered. Use the exact boxed product’s m² per box. Sheet vinyl sold from a roll needs roll-width, seam and layout planning that this box calculator does not perform.

Herringbone, diagonal or strongly directional designs can consume more cut material than a simple straight layout. Sketch the pattern and discuss the allowance with the installer before ordering, especially when matching a repeating design across rooms.

From measured floor to whole boxes

The engine uses net area × (1 + waste/100), divides by labelled m² per box and rounds up. For 18 m² with 10% allowance, the target is 19.8 m². A SKU with 2.2 m² per box needs nine boxes, giving 19.8 m² purchased coverage. There is no additional area above that target from package rounding.

Separate underlay has its own roll coverage and allowance only when the product permits it. For gluedown vinyl, check its adhesive and substrate system instead of assuming a floating underlay belongs beneath it. If backing is attached, record that choice and avoid double counting a roll.

Gluedown and click installation differ

Gluedown planks rely on the specified adhesive and a carefully prepared, flat and dry substrate. Click products need compatible underlay or backing, joint and perimeter details. Follow the exact installation instructions; the calculator cannot decide installation type from the word “vinyl” on a listing.

Check concrete moisture and wet-area suitability against the selected system. A water-resistant vinyl surface does not cure moisture below it or make every adhesive suitable. Confirm the installer’s plan for subfloor repairs, seams and transitions.

Compare actual purchase costs

Price per box is multiplied by whole boxes; price per purchased m² uses the purchased box area; labour uses net installed area. Missing prices remain unknown, so a partial subtotal should not be read as an all-in installation quote.

Request separate figures for specified adhesive, primer or levelling, door trims and delivery. Match the quote’s SKU and box coverage to the one in the calculation. If a seller substitutes another installation format, rerun the plan with its actual packaging.

Common questions

Does this work for sheet vinyl rolls?

No. It rounds boxed planks or tiles, not roll widths and seams.

Does gluedown vinyl need underlay?

Follow the selected product’s adhesive and substrate system rather than adding underlay by assumption.

Why is the purchase larger than the measured room?

The allowance is applied before rounding up to whole boxes.
